Description
A refreshing, make-ahead berry sangria that combines red wine, fresh berries, and citrus for a crowd-pleasing summer cocktail that is easy to make and budget-friendly.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 bottle (750ml) dry fruity red wine (e.g., Garnacha, Tempranillo, or Merlot)
- 1 cup (240ml) orange juice
- ½ cup (120ml) Triple Sec or Cointreau
- 1 pint (450g) strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 pint (450g) raspberries
- 1 cup (150g) blueberries
- 1 medium lemon, sliced
- 2–4 tablespoons simple syrup or sugar
- 1 cup (240ml) soda water or sparkling water
- Ice (large blocks or cubes)
Instructions
- Wash berries and slice strawberries into quarters or halves. Slice oranges and lemons into thin rounds.
- Place sliced strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries into a large glass pitcher.
- Sprinkle sugar or simple syrup over the fruit and gently toss to coat. Let sit for 5-10 minutes to macerate and release juices.
- Pour in the orange juice and Triple Sec (or chosen liqueur). Stir gently to combine.
- Open the red wine and pour the entire bottle into the pitcher. Stir slowly but thoroughly to mix with fruit juices and sugar.
- Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight (up to 24 hours).
- About 30 minutes before serving, remove from the fridge and add soda water. Stir gently.
- Fill glasses with ice and ladle the sangria into glasses, ensuring each serving gets a mix of liquid and fruit.
- Garnish with fresh strawberry or orange slice if desired.
Notes
Do not use oaky wines like Cabernet Sauvignon as the oak clashes with the fruit. The sangria improves with time, so making it the night before is recommended. Add soda water only right before serving to maintain fizz. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute wine with grape juice and Triple Sec with orange juice.
